Side panels under dash (at floor/toeboard) should have upholstery material or are they just painted black?

They were (and still are) vinyl covered paperboard in my 38.

The reproduction ones that came from HC in my 32 appear to be just paperboard and NO vinyl.

In my ‘37 Master coupe the panels were more like a heavy cardboard with some type of what I would call paint on them. They definitely were not covered in vinyl.

Most upholstery suppliers sell a heavy black cardboard that is used for that application. It may even have a wax in it to make it somewhat water resistant. I have the original set for my '29 coupe. It had a textured surface on it. A Durant that was restored for our friend had textured cardboard that looked like alligator hide.

Car is a '32 5 window sport coupe. I am using 1/8" hard board (aka masonite).
Thanks for the replies. No one indicated upholstery material here so I guess I'll just paint them black.

My personal opinion is that the masonite will not accept the paint readily. The paperboard will absorb the paint so it does not chip or flake off.

I used Jesso (I think that's the name) on a cardboard sun visor. It accepted the paint.

The masonite is brown and unfinished. It sands easily. Basically compressed paper or sawdust I think. I used 3M Super 77 spray adhesive for a couple of the other panels to attach upholstery material. Seems to work well.

I have no experience with the thin masonite you refer to but if it's like the 1/4" stuff I do have experience with, sanding it should give it enough tooth to adhere. It's the gloss that's the enemy.

I used some that was closer to 3/16 to make the rear window tray (package tray) in my 67 Cougar. It was smooth on one side and textured on the other. I wanted the texture to mimic what the package trays were like originally. Took paint quite well. Now if I had used the smooth side...IDK.
I was planning on using what is left of the 4x8 sheet I bought to make the kick panels for my 28 truck as well as the panels that go behind the doors aside of the seat.
Think I got it at Home Depot.
