Hi,
I just bought a 1951 Chevy 216, Deluxe Styleline. I don't know what oil is in it. There is an oil filter.
What oil do you recommend and why??
Thanks, Jim

A warning in advance. You will find 95% of the people here use 10W-30.
Why; The viacosity covers the three viscosities specified in the owners manual. Also the additive package far exceeds 1951 requirements.
5W-30 is also a good choice.

What most people don't understand that oil droplet size is critical in lubricating: cylinder walls, rings, wrist pins and rods. Too viscous and the droplets are too big to do a proper job.
There are thousands of engines whose lives have been shortened by using high viscosity oils to attempt to reduce oil usage or produce a thicker oil film that just saps horsepower without improving lubrication a tad.
How Sweet the roar of a Chevy four!

I agree completely.
I've never known an engine that was hurt by using an oil that was "too light".
If an oil is going to lubricate and prevent wear... it has to get there first.

If the bearings and rings are so loose as to need a viscus oil to cushion and stop oil plumes from following you it is time for a rebuild. I like 10-30 in my old cars. I bought a Willys Knight and it came with a half case of 50wt. Now I am having trouble finding a shop for a rebuild.

i WOULD LIKE TO REVISE MY FIRST POST A LITTLE I drove my cars a lot and for long distances AT HIGH SPEEDS AND IN SUMMER. SOMETIMES OVER 100 DEG. iF MOST OF YOUR DRIVING IS JUST AROUND TOWN, LESS THn 1/2 hour at a time I would go with 5W-20. Also I never start the engine ukless I am going to be hittig the road. Some folks say they start the engine and let it run for a hour every month. All this is doing is geting raw gas and ondensation into the oil and never getting the oil hot enough to boil it off. letting the engine run at idle speed is not getting lubrication up to the wrist pins ans rings.
