Hi 444johnr,

Welcome to the VCCA's website!

Is your vehicle a car or truck? If a truck, a 1/2 ton or one ton? Let us know and post some pics!

I have a '28 1/2 ton truck (Justin) that uses the same tires as the '27 and '28 cars (4.50-21). I bought my bias ply tires at Lucas Classic Tires (https://www.lucasclassictires.com/), along with inner tubes and flaps.

I've driven on these tires for over 10 years now (and approx. 2500 miles) with no problems. ;-)

My '27 one ton truck (Lurch) uses 6.50-20 tires and I've been using used tires on that truck since I put it together over 25 years ago. Occasionally, I'll upgrade to 'newer' used tires, and when I do I get new inner tubes from Lucas or Coker.

Cheers, Dean

I bought the tires for my 27 speedster from Summit, they show them for a Model A, they are 5.00/5.50. The car had 2 that size and 2 the next size small.
Summit has free shipping on orders over $99.00. I also bought a set of Coker Classes tires from them for my 47 Fleetline.

John,
Take another look at the size on your tires or look at a different tire. Your numbers do not fit into the typical tire size designations.

Hi 444johnr

I may be wrong but...
29/4.40 tires should be on a 21 inch rim.
Tires for 21 inch rims are available.
You should be able to use something like this:
https://www.lucasclassictires.com/440-450-21-LUCAS-Olympic-Tread-Blackwall-344p.htm
which you will find on the Lucas web site Dean referred you to above.

Hope that helps.:-)

Update:
Or are they on 20 inch rims??
Measure your rims where the inner diameter of the tire bead sits.
If they are 20 inch, you can use these:
https://www.lucasclassictires.com/475-500-20-LUCAS-Olympic-Tread-Blackwall-47550020L.htm

Before the mid-1930s, tire sizes related to the outside diameter of the tire, not the inside diameter, which equates to rim size.

So, your old tire of 29/440 means that the outside diameter (29 inches) minus the total height of the tire (4.40 inches times 2 (across the diameter of the wheel it takes two heights of the tire)) makes a rims size of 20 (29-8.8=20).
