I need to replace the seals on my 32 Chevy rear axle and I need to know if there is a bolt / clip in the differential which must be removed prior to pulling out the axle shaft. I have never removed an axle shaft and I do know on later years models there is a bolt and C clip in the differential housing which must be removed prior to removing the axle.

1932 rear axles are held in by a plate (also retains a seal) that retains the outer rear axle bearing in the housing. To remove the axle it is necessary to remove the brake drum to get access to the bolts holding the plate in position. There are several ways to remove the drum from the tapered end of the axle. Pullers using the wheel studs are most often used today. Pulling on the outer edge of the drum is not a good one.
