Hello, finally got to drive my 26 touring the other day but the steering box has way to much play.
1. How do I get the excess play out of it?
2. It has a grease zerk, this needs to be replaced and filled with oil, correct?
3. I looked under the "search" but could not find any info, am I doing something wrong?

Thanks again for all of the help.

There was a post back in early 2006 that showed how to machine an off-set bushing for the steering box to remove the play in the steering wheel. Maybe someone can locate the exact thread. I saved the pictures but not the name of the post.

It's also possible to make a one millimeter of center bronze bushing on the pitman arm shaft. You have to cut of a little on the end of the steering gear housing, and take out the inside diameter of the housing to fit a new bushing. Adjust the bushing and secure with some set screw.

Those images are from 8-1/2 years ago. I think most of those images were from another hosting site and the link posted here. If that link was not maintained it won't post. Also I think when Peter took over as web host there were some changes that may have effected those links as well.

You are correct in that those images were at another site.
The links are correct and would work if they were still available at the other site.
It has nothing to do with Peter or myself at least for this issue.
In fact they still work but the site(imageshack.com) has removed them for whatever reason.

I saved them for 15 years. I don't have the text but the pictures have some instructions on them. I hope this helps.

Does anyone know if this same method can be used to remove the excess play from the steering on a 1931. If not could you point me in the correct direction?

Thanks,

The 1931 uses a different type of steering gears than the earlier set up.

Jeremy,

With a helper get under the car while the helper moves the steering wheel back and forth. Watch each connection and the pitman shaft as it comes out of the steering gear.

Also as a first step I would buy an owners manual which has the instructions for adjustment. The Filling Station may have a reprint and the originals can be found on e bay.

One other suggestion is to search this site as this question has come up many times before, you may get better suggestions.

Thanks you for the advice. We have followed the instructions in the manual and still have a lot of play in the wheel. Which means either we aren't doing it correctly or we are missing something. Does anyone know if it is normal to have some play in the steering. The steering wheel will travel 2-3 inches in either direction. That seems too loose to me.

My thinking is that 2-3” in each direction is too much free play in the steering.

Do you have that much freeplay throughout the full range of steering travel?

I assume that you disconnected the pitman arm before you made the steering gear adjustments.
