1998 GMC Suburban 2500 with7.4. The starter made a bad grinding sound , never made that sound before, after a 3rd start it quit. I pulled the starter and discovered the tail end was broke off, the case was also cracked. There were no shims, the starter was a remanufactured ac delco. Most have a couple shims ,could this have been the problem?

The use of the shims varied based on how far the gear on the starter drive would engage the flywheel. The shims were there to compensate for manufacturing tolerances.
