I am installing a 54 std trans in my 51 and am curious how others who have done so handled the difference in the location of the mount.

I'm wondering if the 54 internals would fit in a 51 case it would solve your problem but a lot of work.

I believe it would but not going to happen now as I have fabricated a mount. A while back I bought a 54 engine and trans and went thru the trans cleaning and reassembling as it was different than my 51 only to learn that it was not a 54 trans but rather an earlier one (can't remember year) that had a rear case section same as the 54. It actually has the 51 and 54 mounting areas. Just after I finished rebuilding (basically cleaning) that tranny I came across a free 54 tranny and differential along with a few other parts from a rodder. Having a good 54 I decided to rebuild it with all new bearings etc. In hindsight I should have put those internals in the tranny that would fit either 51 or 54 but having just gone thru it I did not want to take it all apart again. It will make a good spare if ever needed.

The early trans.would sometimes jump out of high gear I have one in my 54 convert.they stiffened the detent springs but what I did was to put 3/16 inch spacers in the springs to increase the tension works like a charm.
