dog, nice site...I've been looking to replace the battery cables on the old boy and wondered if you thought the ones listed here were correct and any better than those sold by other vendors?..  epi

If you want a good functional heavy gauge battery cable and you don't have to have an "original" cloth covered one go to a farm tractor dealer (John Deere, Case IH, Massey Fergerson, New Holland, etc.) or a place like Tractor Supply Company. They have 0 and 00 gauge cables with heavy duty terminals in several lengths, but they are vinyl covered.

Better yet......go to your welding supply shop and get a 0000 copper welding cable. Got one on my '51 Chevy and it works great! :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

I found that under about 1/12 inches of plastic insulation that I had a 12V positive cable and of course the starting problems that go with it. I went to a local Battery/Electrical repair shop and had them build me an 00 cable that works fine and cost me $17.00.

Heck yes!! That's why it works go good on a 6 volt system. Only problem is...because of it's size, it takes two dudes to install the cable. One to hold it while the other dude hooks it up! ha ha! :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

for those whom haven't seen 4/0 welding cable, it's made up of over 2000 fine strands of copper for flexibility and is over 3/4" diameter in section... :love: epi

0000 cable is about the right size for a set of booster cables for D-8 Bulldozers and B-29s, or a leash for Rex the wondering Dawg!

That would be too small of a leash for this mutt! :eek: :eek: :eek: I've had the welding cable on my '51 Chevy for years now and it works great.......especially when I have to start the car when it's hot. This larger diameter of the positive cable seems to make a big difference when starting hot.

Several good suggestions here for battery cable purchasing locations. Anymore suggestions for purchase or construction of a good Chevy cable or has this thread run it's course and we should close and move on.

We have a lot more to learn about battery cables, we haven't even explored Dis-connects, ground cables, woven vs. stranded, brass vs. copper ...black vs red etc. etc. etc.... and ...
Elvira's potential is she Negative grounded? or positive grounded? High voltage or Ultra-high voltage, is she AC or strictly DC? is she single wired or complex wired and is she regulated or unregulated...

Shocks, If you do buy a wiring harness from "ynzyesterdaysparts" or some other place, how about posting it so we know what you thought of it and the instructions. I will need a wiring harness for my '31 this summer.  Thanks.

Jerry, I ordered a wireing harness for my '51 a couple of years ago from a vendor (don't remember which) there was a choice of the cloth wrapped original wire or new plastic coated, Chevrolet didn't change to plastic till 53 or 54, I chose the plastic coated because I won't be showing the 51. the harness was marked as a ynzyesterdays part. It had a good instruction sheet and diagram showing the wires laid out and showing the location of each connection, I am sure a 31 would be more simple than the 51.
