1941 coupe, 6 V system, last week the temp gage needle started moving from left side to far right side in less than a mile of driving. Car is not overheating. What do you suggest? Jerry whitfield Winston salem NC

Check the water level. It may be so low it is below the temperature bulb.

The temperature gauge in that car is a mechanical gauge. Nothing electrical in that circuit/ The heat in the engine causes the liquid in the bulb to convert to a gas and expand to move the needle.

Yes, but I think the bulb needs to be in water or some other mediem to do that. I don't think it will indicate mere steam or heat, per se. Charlie

In all cases (electric or mechanical) the sensor bulb needs to be submerged in liquid to operate properly. Tony
