I have looked and cannot find. Does anyone know of a source of 5/16" diameter felt wick to replace in starters and 1/4" for generators? Thanks.

Didn't measure the wick in the generator as I was able to reuse them. Also wasn't paying attention. The generator is probably 1/4". Anyway anyone know of a source of either size is the question at hand.

I have also been looking for this. Some possibilities (that I have not verified yet) are: http://www.magnetoparts.com/oil_cup.htm 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", and 3/8" in 2 inch lengths. http://www.classicgenerator.com/ I just put an inquiry in here for an odd generator bushing and expect an answer soon. I believe he has felt wicks. https://www.mcmaster.com/felt-wicking Look for "firm felt cords" Available in F1 and F3 felt. I think F1 is what we want in a generator, but would like to hear what other people think. Smallest length is 5 feet.

The generator is probably 1/4". I did some research on the generator oil wick and the diameter of the generator oil wick is indeed 1/4" like you thought.

So I take it that you put an oil soaked wick in the little flip top holes on the starter and generator. I did not know that. I was going to ask about that when I got to that point on my car. There were no wicks in them when I got the car so I had no idea what they were for. What kind of oil do you use? Is that all you do is soak a wick and put it in the hole? How long should the wick be?

I found them when taking apart my units. The generator has one at the commutator end only. It goes up into the hole and lies across the bottom of the void. It's 1/4" and wicks oil up to the shaft via a hole in the side of the bushing. If I remember it was about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4" long. No wick at the pulley end except for the felt washer that acts a seal for the shaft. The starter has a felt way down in the hole below the oil cup and again there is a hole that allows the side of the wick to touch the armature end. It is 5/16" and maybe about 1" long. I believe regular engine oil is sufficient or maybe a lighter one. I haven't checked into that yet

I bought a few feet of McMaster-Carr's round felt wicking in 1/4" diameter, and it worked fine. I have quite a bit left over and would be happy to send you a foot of it at no charge if you'll get me your mailing address.

"Any type of light weight oil will be sufficient to use on the oil wick."
Like 'electric motor oil'? (I have a can of this from Sears. Its 'W' is not specified.) Or like 5W-20 motor oil? Is there any concern regarding the compatibility of modern oils with the metals (brass or bronze) possibly used in the 943J generator and the 714L starter?
Thank you.

Thank you for the Welcome! And for the oil info. I'm a newbie just getting started on a '29, 1.5 ton truck. And I'm learning that I have a lot to learn.
