Need to know where to find the VIN on a 1955 Belair. I know that one spot is the steering column, is there another place to look?
Thanks,

bob

I think you are getting the passenger cars mixed up with the Vettes, the vettes had the VIN on the base of the column.

The VIN is also stamped on the driver side frame rail "on the top".

As John mentioned, the Vette had the VIN plate on the steering column. (only place to spot weld on the plastic fantastic)

The following may not answer the original poster's question, but it helps set the record straight regarding Corvettes:

" Each Corvette was assigned a serial number, which later became known as the vehicle identification number (VIN). On 1953-'59 Corvettes the serial number plate moved around slightly, but it was always on the front part of the left door post and was retained by two phillips head screws. In 1960 the serial number plate was welded to the steering column under the hood just below and slightly forward of the brake master cylinder. The relocation of the serial number plate from the door post to the steering column occurred on AIM date 11-24-59..."

Ollie, I have heard this for years about the driver side frame rail, on the top side facing the floor pans. I have yet to find one or even any traces of one being stamped. I have seen pictures of it, but never found one. I should have been clearer with my reference to Corvette.
Why the question on the VIN? Lost tag?
