The pulley is separate from the water pump.

I have changed mine ( 1939 Master Deluxe)with the rad installed. It is close but can be done. Taking the rad out requires hood removal which is not an easy one man job.

Good luck.

I'm with Dave on this one. It can be done with much less hassle than pulling the hood. Just be prepared for the possibility of losing a bit of skin to the radiator if you're not careful.

If the pulley is loose or water pump bearing is bad making it appear to be looosose you will need a new water pump and it will come with the pulley pressed on. The water pump is not difficult to replace on a 1939 without removing hood, etc. Just unbolt the fan blade first.

It is very unusual for the pulley to be loose or wobbly unless the bearings are gone on the pump. When working in the area of the pump to prevent skinned knuckles put a thin sheet of cardboard up against the radiator. It will also help to prevent damage to the radiator core.

The pulley is pretty loose..it just flops back and forth..I just install a rebuilt generator..is it possible I had the belt to tight to make the pulley break like this..it sure did not seem to tight..this water pump is at least 35+ years old..

Do I need to drain the water out of the Rad to replace the water pump?
