Can I ask what other members think of the replacement of valve seats so that the 1931 independence can run on modern fuel, before I put the engine back together.also about the main, big end bearings (shells)In the filling station catalogue it talks about a babbiting service does that mean you can't buy big end and main bearings?

Standard valve seats are OK for the old cars and stellite or hardened seats are not a necessity. Big end and main bearings are babbited so they will need to have the babbit repoured on your rods and bearing shells and then machined to fit your crankshaft. The bearings are shimmed so it may be possible to tighten the bearings by removing shims if not too badly worn. The connecting rods for big end bearings can be converted to accept inserts if desired and that may be an option to consider

Hardened valve seats are a waste of money unless you need to replace the seats because of damage. The exhaust temperature is not even close to high enough to erode the seats even without lead or other additives.
