Are there different style of bumper jacks that fit a 41 Special Deluxe coupe? I have seen pictures of the universal jack that has the round shaft that the jack rides up and down on. Were there any that had the ratcheting style that rode on the more "squared" shaft?

I believe the jack you are refering to is the accessory friction jack.

Rod, I do not know if two different styles of jacks were available in 1941 for the cars. Gene or someone else might have access to that info?

41 Bumper Jack

This picture shows a 41 jack I purchased off of ebay. I think I paid $125 plus shipping in around 2008.



This picture I took in 2005 when I visited Phil Hubbard. He was one of the most knowledgeable members in the VCCA on 41 Chevy's. He has since died.

These jacks are not easy to find. If you find one for sale do not be bashful about the asking price. The chance might not come along again to make a purchase.

P.S. These jacks are very dangerous to use. Only in the rarest of situations should they be relied on.

The top jack of yours is the accessory friction jack shown in the accessory books. Versions of that were available for all GM cars and also sold after market bt whi ever made it. Was painted green.
The bumper jack, ratcheting type, looks like a '41-'42. Will send you my pictures later and perhaps you can post then for me.
When I was checking out 1941 jacks Phil showed me the same ones.

There are at least three different versions of the '41 jack. They differ in the post and ratchet mechanism. Two are pictured in the above posts. They are not impossible to find and when found can be a bit pricy if the seller knows what he has.

Hi guys, sorry I haven't got back earlier. All this info is great. I've learned a lot here. What I have bought the other day at a swap meet, is the same as is pictured here. The ratcheting one painted black. It has the base and the handle too. One problem though, the sprig inside either has broken or come loose. I have an idea where it goes but would like a picture showing it if possible. If that is too hard to show, maybe a good hand sketch. If the spring is broken, are there any available anywhere? If not, I'll have to make one. If it is easier to send pics via email, then I'll PM my email address to you.

Gene, emailed me these pictures to post for you. I could not get them any clearer. Perhaps another member can provide you additional pictures. My jack is the green design which I think we have agreed is not the same as yours.

That is a set of tools that came with a 1941 Chevrolet. The pliers is missing. The cardboard box in the one picture is the original box the tools came in from the factory.

I believe that the open end wrench is missing also.

Those are nice for show, but they can sure be dangerous if the post pops loose from the base during actual use.

When not stood properly those jacks let most down in a hurry and often sideways. I now refuse to use a bumper jack of any sort and prefer 1 that goes under the axle.
