For a 36 master cylinder do you need to remove a frame cross member to get the cylinder out? Your help is appreciated and thanks.

Just rebuilt master cyl on my 36 std coupe . Two bolts hold it in plus brake line ! Easy !

Well doable but not easy unless you like to lay on your back working in small places.

Working on anything under the car is easier with a lift unless you enjoy working on a creeper.

Do you have a flare nut wrench to remove and reinstall the brake line? An open end wrench can make a real mess of a flare nut.

I have the wrench but it sounds like I need to put the car on a lift. This is a car I am helping a museum with..not mine. I am a 29 Chevy guy. Thanks

When I honed and rebuilt my master cylinder in my 1936 Standard it was out of the car. I could not imagine doing this in the car. There just is'nt much room and it is hard to see. Those aches and paines are tough to deal with anyway.

I used to do all my work on a creeper ! But when it got so I couldn't get up and I got more cars , I use a two post lift now ! 34 1/2 ton , 36 FC , 51 Hard Top , 3800 Panel and one F--D .

The Cross Member does not have to come out. Two bolts hold it in there. After taking loose all the obvious like, brake wires, hydraulic line, carter pin and brake pedal pin, return spring, etc. One bolt from the under side(you can see that one from the bottom) and one from the hidden side. Both with box end wrenches. The "hidden" one can only be turned by the box wrench one quarter turn. Then remove wrench flip over and reinsert wrench for 1/4 more turn. Flip back and forth. Lots of fun! Especially if the area is clogged with grease and dirt. You may have to "clear" the area with a straight screwdriver before inserting the box end wrench. I "do it" by feeling the wrench "pop" in place.
