Good afternoon,
My 32 Chevy heat riser flap that is operated by a cable is rusted and frozen solid. Someone has brazed (flux and bronze rod looks like) an arm to the shaft in the past. Does anyone have some experience working on these old heat risers and, if I need one, will I have to make one or are there replacements somewhere? Or, should I not go to the trouble and just leave it open and not worry about the thing working like it should. Thanks,
Mac

If it's open, pretend you don't have a heat riser cause.....
Old cars have always owned me.

Yep, you missed a good one!! It's there (somewhere) but the search feature is totally useless.

I tried for over an hour but no luck...Even wen through a ton of the old messages page by page...Chipper advised just to leave it open and not to worry so that is what I will do. I was just trying to get everything working on our old girl. Next is the electroloc and the bushings in the torque tube. Brakes still squeal and stick but I guess this is "normal". Thanks for the response JYD and best always.... Mac

Lee Allen in the VCCA makes a heat riser repair kit for the 1932 manifold: www.leesparts.webs.comph:770-938-0861 He advertises in the G&D also.

I used Lee's the kit to fix this problem. Just be warned it is a bit of a task to complete the work. Well worth the effort. He uses copper sleeves that require you to drill or enlarge the existing holes. Unless you are machinist you will need to have this done by others. The drill size escapes me now, but our machine shop had to purchase one. It cost me 80 dollars to have this done. This seems simple to do but the tolerance is very tight and must be in line. Hats off to Lee for this fix.

Thanks for the heads up....I am a fabricator and have a lot of machining experience but if it looks too complicated, I can get the work done locally by a friend who is a former NASA machinist....

Mac, Doing this project would make a good story to put in the G&D where many would benifit. Just a thought...

Great idea to write an article for the G&D. Now ....who....should......write.....this....article? OH! How about Doug Zeno. I'll volunteer to be the proof reader for the article when you get it written.

Hey Doug,
You should do it since you have a lot more experience than I.....If not, then I could give it a go. Not unlike writing research reports or seminar presentations....Did that for 37 years at Clemson.

Well, when I get mine, I will disassemble the manifold and give the kit a try taking pictures as I go. If I need to involve a machinist, I will take picture of my friend as he does his work as well. Best,
Mac
