On my truck, the clip directly opposite around the circle from the screw hole, fits into a slot in the headlight pot. That is the way it is secured. My 1951 1 Ton is now on the road! My 38 Master 4 Door is also now on the road .

Don't know about yours, but the new rubber seal for my '54 was a little larger diameter than the original which made attaching the clips difficult. Also, the seal has a little flap in which the headlight bezel sits. You can see some pieces of the seal in the pic below. - Lonnie 1954 3100 OLD STUFF ... houses, furniture, cars, wine ... HOWEVER, I just noticed that your bezel is different to mine. Yours has a tab attached to it above the clip. The tab probably fits into a slot on your headlight housing. My bezel does not have the tab. Your clip may be installed correctly for 1940. So you may need to disregard my answer. The installation of the clip on my bezel is correct for my '54 pickup. The "tab" on the clip fits into a slot at the top of the headlight housing to secure the bezel at the top. There is no tab on the bezel. A screw through a hole in the bottom secures the bottom of the bezel.
