In another thread we were talking about the accessory spare tire monitor. It's a hose that attaches to the valve on the spare so that air can be added, or pressure monitored without taking the spare from the trunk. I had stated that the other end of the hose comes out someplace like below the rear bumper, but then found this photo on the Chevybombs website. Is this the correctly installed accessory?

I think most folks simply cut a hole in the trunk floor to access the valve stem. On the business coupe anyway. laugh

I thought they all did because mine had one but Steve had to cut one in his.

Not looking for one... Just wanted to correct the error in my post on the other thread. I started a new thread because we got off topic on the old one. The accessory was for '40-'41, so I guess you '37-'38 guys are stuck with your little hole. Kevin is right, it's so you didn't have to open the trunk. Now was it dealer installed? If we were judging at a show, how would we mark the location of the outer end? Would either a lefty or a righty get a deduction, or were dealers sticking them where ever they wanted too?

My 38 coupe does not have the hole cut in the shelf. We talked about this before. They did not come with a hole originally but from what I read some folks complained about having to move the spare tire to air it ..SOOO Chevy made available a drawing template that one could tape on the ledge and know were to cut the hole in with a hole saw. This drawing is pictured on the Old car manuals project web site along with the story .......ED

I was only wrong one time in my life so far. But that time I was right, and only thought I was wrong....ED

My old car didn't have a hole either. I saw Tinys and copied it by guessing the measurements from the rivets in the edgeplate.

The hole is 2 and 5/8ths diameter.

This item is something that I find could be very useful on my pickup. How could a guy make one of these? I know you would nee a hose, but what sort of connectors would you need? This would be a very nice feature to have on my 37.

You can make one quite easily. You would need a fitting from the end of an old tire pump, and a valve stem from a tube, and a short hose. The valve stem would provide the fitting that goes through the back of the tire in the vicinity of the tail light. The other end is screwed onto the valve stem of the spare tire.
