The 1929 Chevrolet steering gear box is of the worm and gear type and it only has two adjustments; main shaft up and down and the pitman shaft in and out. You can check out your 1929 shop manual and it will tell you how to make those two adjustments.

On the steering wheel backlash, there was no adjustment for that until 1931. At any rate, if you have excessive backlash, you can remove the steering gear, turn it 180 degrees and then reinstall. Since only a few teeth of the gear mesh with the worm at any one time, the unused teeth meshing with the worm will tighten up the steering wheel backlash a little.

I did the 180 degree trick this summer on advice given here and it helped 100%.

Thanks for the imput, but I have tried that already, did not work, I was told by a old timer today that the problem was in the worm gear, it has something to do with the internal grove that is in the worm itself, he says that there was not much you could do except replace it, Anyone got a NOS steering gear worm gear?? Hi ccr7

In 2005 I have a post about this problem.
You can see it here.

https://vccachat.org/ubbthreads.php/topics/52200/Re_How_to_take_play_out_of_192#Post52200

I have use this metod on several gear box.

On my 25 and 26 truck, 28 pickup and my 29 touring I have used this repair , and the play in the wheel are still zero,or near zero, when I drive straight forward

What a great idea! Arvid, thanks for sharing this again. I had not seen it before and I can certainly use it. Thank you!
