I removed the broken piece from the outer side(wheel/brake side, is the splined side bolted in or does it just slide out? thanks

No it is not bolted at the inner end, the axle just slips into the small differential gear splines.

a easy way to pull out the inner half of a broken axle ia to use a chinese finger -- I have several times and it sure saves time

Its commonly used to pull the rope type rear main bearing seal in place on later models. Lets put it this way. Its a loosely woven mesh just large enough to go around a round object. as it is pulled on (to remove the object) the opening gets smaller and grips the object. The harder you pull the tighter it grips.

A friend of mine used a peice of PVC pipe that would fit over the axle. Tap it on and pull the broken half out. He had good luck doing it that way. Good luck with your project.
