OK,
I looked for about 1/2 hour in past postings on a bouncing AMP meter. I know I saw it in here somewere within the last couple of months. Keeping in mind I have everything new or rebuilt. this just started this morining while I was out cruzing around.
Any help on this matter?

Some things that may be the cause.

Brush spring not strong enough.

Brushes not worn in.

Need to reduce the charge rate by moving the third brush.

Thankyou,
When the car is off needle is dead zero. when I turn the key needle drops little. ok I start the car needle jumps around a little I give it some gas moves up to a little over 10 right next to the square box.At Idle it jumps around, while Iam driving it stays still and up to just past the 10 box, I come to a stop sign Idle drops as should needle starts jumping around again. also whats happening when I pull the headlight switch out and then push it back in needle goes to zero and stays there will not move at all, likes its not working. However when I pull the headlight switch in and out several times in a row something happens and it starts working again. I checked the connections and everything is tight. The wireing is all brand new, bought it from the filling Station, (the complete wire harness) everything seems to work great, except the gas gauge. Other than that its just this AMP thing that just came up. Thanks, Ken

Ken,Note that on your Master the charging rate can be increased by pulling out the light shitch 1/2 notch between off and parking lights. This is controlled by a resistance unit that is mounted to the light switch.
The bounce at idle sounds as if the idle speed is just between the generator cutout (or circuit breaker) "cut in-cut out" speed. In other words it is opening and closing. The cutout is the little black box mounted on top of the generator. It disconnects the battery from the generator when the the engine speed is low and generator is not charging....contact points inside the unit open and close.Yours may be weak or??? also. Also disconnects the battery when the engine is not running. If not disconnected the battery would be drained by the generator.

Just some of my thoughts wink

Chief I'm not sure you have a problem as you describe it above. If it holds steady while under power, everything appears to be Okay.

Thanks Gene and Ray,

So If I try to find a good light switch and a new cut out, my problem should be solved ?? The head light switch started first and then this bounce in the AMP meter. or do you think that the two might be related to the cut out. Iam trying to get this fixed as Iam taking about a 200 mi round trip in two weeks and I want to make sure I get there and back safely with my wife and kids. The cut out makes sence( maybe being weak) But I dont understand this light switch.

It appears that your cutout is working exactly as it should. You may be used to alternators, which charge at low idle, generators usually do not. The light switch is critical beause it has a resisive element that supplies ground to the field which is bypassed directly to ground when the switch is pulled out. You will have no ground to the field, either resistive or direct, if the switch is faulty in this area.

Wouldn't bother me as long as its charging and there will be other members along on your trip.
