I recieved my heater control valve back from the rebuilder and installed it on Sunday. I have a 53 Chevy 1/2 ton. On the unit there is this copper wire about a foot long with a screw hole on the end. I hooked it to one of the screws that holds the heater cover. My question is what is this wire for and I still can't figure out why they use this heater control valve. Does anyone know how this thing works and what the wire does. Thanks...Oscar

Hi Oscar, The copper (wire) tube is a part of the control valve. By exposing it to either heat or control sends a message to the valve to either "open" let hot water through the heater core, or "closed" to shut out the water. I don't remember the copper tube being secured with a screw on the end. To prevent puncturing the tube, I would remove the screw.

No need to remove the screw.... As a matter of fact.... You need the mounting screw for the valve to work properly. That is the either filled capillary tube & it is important to mount it on the firewall near the hot air exit of the heater for proper operation of the fresh air heater on the Advance Design trucks. The tube itself has a small drilled mounting clip on it to insure the tube will not be damaged when mounted in the proper location. ![[Linked Image from shutter03.pictures.aol.com]](http://shutter03.pictures.aol.com/data/pictures/10/00A/78/4F/71/90/Ruk5Zy1aYIVJT3V5GHAne39q-Da-pXDW02CF.jpg)

Thanks Mothertrucker, what I did is connect the Tube clip to the heater cover housing. Will that work? I drove my truck to work this morning and the heater seems to work fine. It seems no one knows exactly how this thing works and I still don't.Everybody gives me a different explanation. As long as I have a heater on those cold California (55 degrees)mornings I am a happer camper. How do you know this unit is working? I had it rebuilt at Chevy Duty. Thanks for the help...Oscar   :cool2:

If it isn't leaking and you have adjustable temperature ranges from cold to hot then it is working. Do you have a shop manual for your vehicle? :)

Hi JYD and yes I do have a shop manual for my truck. It does not cover the heaters. I think the gizmo is working ok now. I hooked up the copper tube in a good spot. I will just have to keep playing with it and see what kind of results I get. I know I have heat so when I turn the heater control valve off I should only get air when the heater cools down, is that correct and when I have it turned completly off there should be no water flowing through the heater, is that correct. Thanks and have a great JYD tour. I wish I could make it but I have to work and can't afford it. Thank and have a great chevy day...Oscar
