I'd like to put a Pertronix electronic ignition system in my 49, but I only seem to find applications for 54 and up 6 volt systems. Does anyone konw if there is a separate one for my year or would a 54 version work?

You could install a 1953-54 distributor if you really wanted the Petronix.
I have a Petronix in my Corvair.I do not feel the performance is any different but the Covair distributor has some problems that the Petronix eleminates.
I have never considered changing over my other cars.Would rather replace points every 5 or 10 years.I carry and extra set of points and condenser along for emergencies.....and feel a lot safer that way.

i put a petronics ignition on a 54 belair,,,,,, within a few months is was a headache.when i called petronics they yold me it was either good or bad, since the car was running terrible but running it couldnt be their stuff cause generally electronic components dont get weak, they just go completely. fact is that it produced a weak spark, so weak the plugs were fouling with a few starts. i didnt want to listen to the guys in this chat room. to petronics credit they were happy to refund my money. i still have the system on my 63 nova with not a problem. there is no difference in gas comsumption or performance. when it breaks i will be on the side of the road doing more work to put the points back in. but especially for the 6 volt cars id shy away from petronics, lots of problems in our local cruze ins. i sound like a old timer here, stay with the tried and true, pionts will always get you home,,,,,,,,,bill

Put Pertronix part #1167N6 on my 49' Fleetline and added a coil (#40011)for just in case... Box says it's for a 235, but CBS Performance Automotive says it's the one. No problems since.

i have a 6V pertronix installed in the 52 216 distributor. So far it has been no problem, with the stock set up by this time I would have had to reset the points and retime the car.

Thanks to all for the help. Actually found the right Pertronix for a 49 216 and put it in along with a new coil. Works just fine....and no more worrying about ten year old points!

Just be sure to carry a $6 set of points and a $3 condenser and a $4 flashlight in case the $100 Perfronix thing dumps on you out in the middle of the Interstate, watch out that the wind off those 18 wheelers going by at 80 or 85 MPH don't blow off your new $12 VCCA hat while you are setting the gap on your old spare points, in order to get home!
Sorry about that $100 figure here is the real info from EASTWOOD Company.

70076 Pertronix Ignitor Kit Delco Negative Grnd 6 volt
