Just a curiosity question. Back in the mid 70's our small local Chevy dealer used to have a "back lot" where they would stick all the older trade-ins. I was just a teenager at the time looking for a used car and I remember a red 62 SS Impala they had stuck back there. I always wondered about the car since it only had a 235 6 and auto on the column. It did have bucket seats and full SS badging in the interior and exterior. Was a very "base" car if I remember correctly, no power anything. Did something like this exist? This was before cloning was popular so I wouldn't think someone would have gone to the trouble to create an SS.

In 1962 any model,Biscayne,BelAir or Impala had a 235 6 Cyl. and 3 speed as the base engine and transmission..The buyer could order any engine or transmission that was offered. The Super Sport was an option for the Impala series 2 door hardtop....While the majority of SS cars had some form of 8 cylinder engines a 6 would was very available but not common.

I'm guessing that the car in question was a 'loss-leader'. I sold Chevys 'back in the day' and we almost always had a few cars on hand specifically ordered for newspaper ads. Pure bait-and-switch stuff... get 'em in to look at the low-priced car and then sell 'em something with options.
And... a RED SS sitting on the showroom floor with sign on top that said something like: "Take me home for only...." would be a tremendous draw for the look-through-the-window-on-Sunday crowd or the middle-aged guy waiting in the showroom for his car to be serviced. These folks may not have had any 'car savvy', but chances are most of them probably always wanted a sporty, red car.
