I've purchased from northern tools for years without any problems...they, like harbor freight, offer a lot of imported items for less than name brand or american tools...some of it is fine, some less so...just depends what you need, & what you'd like to pay...

Smitty,
Look at Summit Racing they offered the best prices a few years ago, look at Superwinch. They sell a 12 volt unit with a 30 foot remote. They also sell a receiver kit to mount to the winch. I fish plated a class 3 receiver to the floor of my trailer, and I can remove the winch when I want from the receiver. Send me a PM with your e-mail and I will send you some photos of my set-up and the catalog numbers of everything I had used. They also sell a battery feed to run to the rear bumper. I use the tow vehicle battery with a disconnect (so it is not hot when I am not using it) My Dad said he had a good time today at the show.

I researched winches on the web and found the Warn winch model that I needed and found one brand new in the factory box on ebay and got it for about half the cost.

Warn winches

There are a lot of other web sites for winches.

Good luck.

Northern Tool sells some good stuff, I have used both Warn and Superwinch and both are quality product, Superwinch is lower in price and may be of less quality, but unless you plan to use them every day either will more than likely last us the lifetime of the trailer.
It seems to me that Northern Tool has their stuff priced somewhat higher than other online vendors. I bought an el cheapo Harbour Freight 12volt 3000# winch for about $50 to load crates & boxes on my old farm truck. It works but I would not want one in my car hauling trailer, the power leads (smaller that desired wires) go thru the forward - reverse switch rather than useing a solenoid or electronic switching.
Mounting an automobile 12 volt battery inside or on your carhauling trailer makes sense for a couple of reasons, It can also power the breakaway brake switch and power work lights inside a covered trailer and the winch when the tow vechile is not hooked up, It is a simple connection to provide chargeing power from the tow vehicle as you drive. I have had mine since 2002 and never had to charge it with a charger even when it sits for months.
I never owned a Ramsey winch, but we used them on some of the trucks at work and they were very well made, high quality products.
