I have my 1940 master deluxe town sedan on four jack stands to do brake work. The rear drums came off easily, but I can not get the front drums to budge. I borrowed a large gear puller to try to pull them off- The ends of the puller do not fit well into the grooves on the outside perimeter of the brake drum and soon slip even with a longer clamp in place to try to hold them in place.
My shop manual says only "remove wheel and brake drum" What is the best way to remove a stuck front brake drum?

Have you popped the plug and turned the starwheel (adjusting screw) to back off the drums? If you have then you may have to heat up the outside of the drums to expand them. Just dont get it to close to the brake hose.

The front drums are rivoted to the hubs, have you removed the cotter key and spindle nut? The drum comes off with the hub.

I have the master cylinder off the car and both front wheels spin freely so I know shoes are not tight against the drum- Should I still have to turn the adjusting star to further retract shoes before drum will come off?

As I posted my last response I saw your reply,chevyb I am off to the shed to remove cotter pin and spindle nut. Will do so feeling a little foolish, but appreciative of your help.

Do you have a shop manual? If so, always refer to that first for the item in question because the shop manual can be of a great help to you when trying to remove parts like the front brake drums for example. :)  :grin:

Yes, what you are about to do....Removing the front brake drums is just a bit more involved than has been mentioned here, along with the hub, and brake drum will come the wheel bearings, races and you really need to have a bit of knowledge in order that you keep the parts in good condition and replace them properly.
Please obtain a shop manual for your car. If you already have one look for an expanded illustration of the front axle, spindle and hydraulic brake system, also read the entire book then start over and read it again. Sometimes the second time around, things start to make sense. Just my own experiance......

Both front drums with attached hubs came off easily- I havea lot of experiance with wheel bearings and could deal with that once I knew the drums were riveted to the hub. I have a genuine chev shop manual that is being used, But when I went to the section on brakes the first instruction was "jack up car, remove wheel and drum" I should have looked for an exploded view.
