Don't know anything about gas tanks. Been reading about cleaning and sealing and ran across someone asking about a baffle. Do all gas tanks of the 30's have baffles and what do they look like and where are they located? I don't see anything that would be a baffle in the bottom of my tank looking through the sending unit hole. Is the purpose to keep the gas from sloshing around?

Don't know about all the 30's Chevy's but my 34 Standard has a baffle just about in the middle about 5 inches high. Mine had come loose so I had to have a hole cut in the top of the tank to reattach it. Then had it welded closed, put in new sending unit and had it lined, and yes it's to keep the fuel from sloshing so much.

You mentioned that a hole was cut in the top of the tank to access the baffle and was then welded shut. Many people have been injured or killed by cutting and welding gas tanks; even tanks that were emptied years before they exploded. For the benefit of someone wanting to open up their gas tank, what precautions were used to prevent an explosion?

Opening up a tank is not an owners job. It should only be accomplished by the professionals. The procedure is to chemically clean the tank. A flap is cut in the top of the tank so it can be sand-blasted on the inside and any repairs made. When finished, the flap is closed with solder using an iron. Lastly, the tank is coated on the inside with sealer. Make a search and you will find many pages on this subject. Particularly, in the Tech Talk section.

Don't see any signs that the tank has ever been cut. Odd I can't see a baffle. Maybe I can find a mirror to stick inside and look around. Thanks for your replies.

Correct guys, my tank was first boiled for two days before they cut the hole, then the baffle was spot welded back, then the hole welded closed prior to lining which was cured for a week before new fuel was put in. I tried the mirror thing and really couldn't see much that way. When I first asked about this here I was told to use "Safety Matches" to look inside.DON'T DO THIS, it was just a joke....wasn't it?

I'm convinced there's no baffle in this 36 standard tank and it doesn't look like this tank was ever cut into. Would this cause the gas gauge needle to be unsteady? Where would I even find a baffle that would work?

If (?) there is no baffle in the tank, for sure the needle would move more than normal.
