The JOB # says it is a: 1928 National Convertible
G 3 7 8 : You copied the number wrong.

Give location of each # copied.

The body and job numbers were copied from the firewall tag. The engine serial was stamped into a raised pad located behind the distributor. The engine date code was cast below the pad. I will make another attempt to read the engine date code tomorrow.

The "O" could mean Oakland, CA Fisher Body Plant. The # 348532 is the final 4-cylinder 1928 Block, and the casting date code might be G 31 8 ...for July 31st 1928, meaning a "1929 selling season" 1928 Model National Series AB.

Hi David,
You hit the nail on the head. Sorry I'm getting all the info second hand. It turns out the engine serial looks like either 4849756 or 4829756 and date code is "G 31 8". I am trying to determine what the car was originally, when it was built, and whether the engine is possibly original to the car.

Thanks,
Ron

Ok, I confirmed the engine number is 4849756. Do we have an answer to when the "National Convertible" was built and whether the engine is possibly original to the car?

Thanks,
Ron

The casting date code July 31st 1928 is interesting as I have data from several other engines with the same or similar dates!

ENGINE # T4814548 # 348532 G-31-8 July 31st 1928 [CANADIAN]
ENGINE # T4819143 # 348532 G-28-8 July 28th 1928
ENGINE # 4849756 # 348532 G-31-8 July 31st 1928
ENGINE # T4876521 # 348532 [CANADIAN]
ENGINE # T4896595 # 348532 G-31-8. July 31st 1928 fited with TRANSMISSION H-16-8 August 16th 1928

So it would appear that there was a big batch of castings just before the Summer break, used up by Flint Motor Plant possibly after the two-week break in August, and then installed in the chassis say at the end of August or beginning of September to allow for railing across to California? An open car should be selling before the Fall, even in CA so that's the best I can come up with.
