I just got my grill for my 1940 coupe back from being chromed and the company that did it said as they were stripping it the found that the very top of the cross bars of the grill were painted. None of the photos of other 1940s that I have taken show this to be the case. Does anyone know if any part of the grill on this car should be painted or should it all be chromed?

The top flat part of each 1940 grille bar is painted black from the factory, not chrome plated. This is how my NOS 40 grille is.

Chevgene,

Are you saying that every horizonal cross bar is to be painted black on the top portion ???? Gloss or Semi gloss????

Thank You

Yes, its sets off the chrome better. When new it was a thin coat of gloss. This was done on just about every year grille.

The 1940 grille does have a thin coat of black paint on it. It probably is a pain to paint each bar black on the top, but I agree that 1940 grilles that are left chromed plated everywhere definitely look wrong.

On my grill I lightly and carefully sanded the areas to receive paint. Then I bought the widest masking tape I could find and ran it along the front of the grill covering all the places that were to remain chrome. On each of the horizontal ribs I ran my thumbnail along the edge of the the front of the rib to bond the masking tape up to where the horizontal section of the rib was truely flat. The reason was that I only wanted the paint on the flat parts of the grill. Then all you do is buy a quality rattle can or fill your touch up gun and spray.

A trick I have learnt is to use plastic insulation tape or pinstriping tape as edge mask where there is no cover strip then the ordinary paper tape overlapping that. Plastic tape leaves a clean edge where the paper masking tape leaves a patchy edge.

Thanks for the info. I was afraid that was going to be the answer. Looks and sounds like a fun job. Thanks again
