My gas tank is out being cleaned and sealed, I've cleaned the original sending unit and it seems to operate fine, but before installing it back to the tank I want to test it to make sure the two gears are adjusted for a correct reading. I hooked up a test lead to the sending wire at the tank, when I turn the ignition swich on the needle pegs to full and stays there no matter if the float is up or down. So now I'm thinking the original sending unit is bad so I connect a brand new sending unit from The Filling Station and get the same results...pegged at full no matter what the float position. What am I missing or doing wrong? Before I took the tank out the original sending unit would read between 1/4 - 1/2 full with a full tank of gas and would drop as I used fuel, so it was getting current at that time, when I took the sending unit out it was hung up a bit but like I said after a good cleaning it moved freely. I know it must be something simple I'm not doing correct but I'm stumped as to what.

You mentioned that you tested both sending units out of the tank. Did you ground the sending units when you tested them??

No, and that's sorta what I figured might be it. Should I ground from the top of sending unit to chassis with a test lead?

Yep. The sending unit has to be grounded for it to work. :)  :o

Drew 22, Not sure what you mean by the "top" of the sending unit. The wire from the dash gage connects to the terminal at the top of the sending unit. The outer flange where the screws go through is the portion that must be grounded.

Thanks guys, amazing what a couple of alligator clips and a piece of wire will do!! The original sending unit didn't test out very well, but the new one tested fine, the only thing I don't like on the new one is that at it's lowest point it reads about 1/8 of a tank and at it's hightest point it reads about 7/8's full. There aren't any adjustments but but as long as I know how it reads I won't run out of gas. Should be up and running by Friday, on Sat.I'm touring across the city with 60 -80 pre WW2 cars, we're taking part in an exhibition called "The Great Engines" at the local Heritage park where they're having steam tractors, old Fire trucks etc. on display to the public. They're even gonna have a steam powered tractor pull, should be interesting. The club is is called PINMAR (Pinellas Model A Restorers) I'll be the only pre war Chevy in the group which is open to all pre war made vehicles.

If you shorten the arm moving the float closer to the gear it will allow the angle to increase and result in more movement of the dash gauge.
