I have a '28LP that has a extra pair of rear wheels with it. I was going to use them to replace the ones that are more then very bad, presently on the truck. These wheels have clearance holes in the wheels to accept the lug bolts that are the same on both sides of the rim. The wheels on the front, and on my '28 LO have a slot on each side of the outer hole to accept the indexing lugs on the wheel clamps. The two without the slots seem to be the same as the others except for the slots. Does anyone know what these two wheels would have been on originaly.
Thanks
Cleon

Hi Cleon,
The rear wheel felloes with the extra 3 rim bolt holes, were for a rare optional set of extra wide tyre rims.My truck has the hollow cast steel spoke wheels front and rear, and even the fronts have the extra three rim bolts in them.
These rims used the normal 6 rim bolts,as well as another three rim bolts & lugs the same as the other six.The rim itself is a different design to the normal truck split rim,in that the tyre is retained by a locking ring that fits into a groove on the outside edge of the rim, very similar to the type of Kelsey Hayes rims,F**D Model "T" trucks used.
With this type of rim,if you got a flat,if you could prise the locking ring out,you could change a flat without removing the entire rim, making life a bit easier.
In the 24 1/2 years I've owned my '28 LP truck,I've only ever seen one complete pair of these rims, and another pair that would make up at least one rim,as the other was too rusty.
With the standard rims you can run 6.50 X 20" tyres normally, but the extra wide rim would let you run up to at least 7.00 X 20",or 7.50 X 20" tyres even possibly 8.00 X 20" tyres.
Hope this helps.

yay

I guess I did not explain this well. The wheel has 6 holes the same as the others but they are just round clearance holes on both sides of the fellow. They do not have the slots for the wheel clamps. They would probably work with the proper clamps.
Which I do not have

Hi Cleon,
All 1 ton truck felloes have an oval shaped hole on the inside of the felloe,as the correct rim bolts have an oval shape forged just under the head of the bolt,to stop it from turning when you're tightening up the rim clamp nut.
The hole on the outside of the felloe is just a round clearance hole for the 7/16" bolt shank. All the truck felloes should have the 2 small "slots" either side of the outer hole to locate the rim clamp.

Hi CJP'S29

I belive the 2 odd ball wheels I am stuck with may be 1925 or a different year, as I ended up borrowing some from a friends '25 just to get mine on the ground. I'm talking about the rectangle clamps in the picture in my latest post. The fellow has a square hole on the backside of the fellow to accept the carriage bolt type bolt. I was wrong when I posted that both sides had clearance holes. I need to find some more clamps to replace the ones I borrowed. Chevrolet obviously used more then one supplier for their wheels. The bolt in the picture has a square shoulder under the head but it did not show up in the picture.
Oh yes, My friend also has '28 with the same wheels as his '25
Very Confusing
