Now that the car is parked for the winter I would like to fix the clutch chatter problem when starting out in 1st gear. It only chatters starting off other wise shifts fine. So where should I look first? Clutch disk it self? Or?

Thanks for any help

First thing to check would be the motor and transmission mountings. Use a prybar to lift up on all mountings to see if the bolts are loose or has the rubber taken a hike.

If you don't find anything there then lets try to look in the bellhousing for obvious problems such as grease or oil on the clutch disc.

If you don't find anything there then it is time to yard the engine out.

Tim -

After several years of clutch chatter on my 37 1/2 ton truck, I finally replaced the front and rear motor mounts.

I had looked at everything I could think of the try to solve the problem and finally it turned out to be the first thing everyone kept suggesting - the motor mounts.

I would make plans to replace them, especially if they have never been replaced while you have owned the car. After I got my old ones out, it was obvious to me that they were the original 70 year old mounts. It was definitely time! The new ones are great and, when you do it, you'll love your car even more than before!!

Good luck!

Joe ok

Some chatter is normal.Chevrolet refered to it sa gear rattle. After replacing the transmount read the section in the shop manual pertaining to the proper fore and aft adjustment of the mount. For sure replace all of the mounts-all five.
The disc could be part of the problem and the bad mounts magnify it.Would condsider replacing the disc and inspecting the surface on the flywheel and pressure plate.Any excessive play in the splines in the center of the clutch disc, or any other drive train free play will make it worse.Run 140 grease in the transmission.

I know there not correct and I am not going to use them but was just wondering what those chatter tie rods you see once in a while on ebay are for? do they tie the engine to something to help stabilize it? Was just curious

If all the mecanical and drive line parts are good they should not be necessary.

The chatter tie rods attach to the transmission near the front of the transmission and tie to the cross member at the back - one on each side. They are supposed to stabilize the transmission-engine and prevent clutch chatter. They work OK if you don't want to replace the rear motor mounts.

I have a new set in the box if any is interested. Just the box and instruction page is kid of neat to look at.
