The Purolator N-17 filter element fit the Purolator N-1700 series of oil filters. The AC element replacement is Z-3 or C-24.This is from AC literature from 1942.I would assume that this was for an add-on type filter as most cars didn't have a filter as standard equipment back then.Purolator lists a -1500,1600,1700,1900,2900 and 3000 series filter....then they list some more numbers being described at equipment type filters + some for Caterpillar, etc.
Oil filter applications back then were even more confusing than what is used on moder cars.
