I have noticed over the years that several members have wanted to get in touch or know who here on Chat has what year/s of Chevy/s or who lives in the same area.

I know it is in the VCCA membership list for VCCA members but not everyone here is a member of the VCCA. Even VCCA members might like an easy way to know who has the same year vehicle as theirs.

So a couple of questions for the computer experts here.

---Is there a way here to list Chat members by vehicle year/s?

---Is there a way here to list Chat member by state (for USA) or by specific region or area in other countries?

Not required of members of course, maybe just for people who might want to be on these lists.

Louis, It would have to be on a volunteer basis. There are many members that do not list their vehicles on any roster. Just a security thing. I have heard of cases where vehicles have been stolen while a family was attending a funeral. Sad but true.

Basically "it" wouldn't work. You'd only wind up with a partial list at best. Most/many/some guys wouldn't participate for the (security) reason noted above. And other reasons also.

No, not easy.....
.... What are you doing writing a book?

That might be a good subject to ask Billy BaRRker to include in the member profile info, optional of course.

but if you want to now just send an email or a PM and find out from whom you choose, I really had not needed all that much information...yet.

The reason for this request is that I found a nice '32 California license plate the other day and I wanted to tell the people on Chatter with '32s and live in California about it but I couldn't because it would be so time consuming. This is what sparked the idea of having these lists; with this very limited information maybe all of us could help each other more. I know several members here have asked "Does anyone else have a __?____?".

I don't understand how a person or their vehicle security is at risk with these lists. IMHO

I don't understand the problem with them...here is what I had in mind:

EXAMPLE: if we did list Chatter members under what year they own or like -- under "1932" you would see "Louis C." no address or real name or phone number or zip code listed or anything else.

Under "where do you live" "Louis C." would be on the "Florida" list.

Now I know we aren't as large as Alaska or Texas but I think thiefs would have somewhat of a problem finding me or my vehicle with this very limited information. IMHO

What are the "other reasons"? Please tell me what I am missing??

However I would worry:

If someone really wanted to steal my vehicles using Chatter I would have a problem since I (and most of us) have already said in many different strings what cars I have; however since there's no address I have not had my car jacked. Knowing what state or area of a country I live in would not be of much help to a thief either IMHO, (however a lot of us have that listed already) I was only thinking of making it easier with a list to use.

If I was a car thief I would go to any car show or a show and shine and read the information on the car or talk to the owner that would be a much easier way for me to locate and steal a vehicle; or I could join a national or a local car club and get a membership directorary with names and addresses.

The simplest and easiest way is to list the license plate either in the "Parts For Sale" forum or in the 1929-32 forum. Those that are looking for such a thing will find it if they are interested.

:) :) wink

I had thought of that JYD but as you know not everyone checks every forum everyday. I thought this would make it a lot easier and helpful for everyone.

Of course the "where do you live" list would make it possible for people with similar interests and/or cars to contact each other and help each other with their cars. And if they are close enough they maybe could see a car like theirs and talk to the owner which is a lot more help then reading about the car in a manual or talking to someone on line about the car. Some of us don’t have local VCCA clubs to go to for help.

If there isn't any interest in making these lists that is ok.

I still don't understand how they would pose any security threat to anyone.

Just curious here are there other "reasons" besides 'no interest' in making these lists?

Maybe you should volunteer to make these lists and see if they turn out to be worthwhile. It is a lot of work, very time consuming, and the end result (vs the total time involved) may not be what you had hoped.

The idea was that here on Chatter for people to add their Chat 'handle' to the year they like or have and their 'handle' on a list for where they live.

That would make the lists available for everyone here on Chatter to use and maybe help.

I like the idea. I think it has merit and I think it would be safe.

I personally don't know anyone where I live with an antique Chevy. There have been times I needed what would be simple advice or a quick look see at a part or something and that is not possible. But it's always been my thought that someone with an old Chevy must live near me.

On the same lines I am familiar with the 6 cyl Chevy that was made from I think 36 to 62. I'm not familiar with numbers and what not but I can work on them all day. let me rephrase that, I can supervise all day.

Not to forget maybe some Chevy collectors would like to get together locally every once in awhile.

Just my .02.

Yeah I know. Now I owe y'all $20 in change.

There are many security issues to think about. However that said
many times I wonder what type of cars some of the members own then I would know who I should send a pm to.Because we both own the same year car and could share photos and stories for that year of Chevrolet

my 26 chevy, That is exactly what I was hoping the lists would do for all of us.

I would really like to know who shares an interest in the vehicles I have too.

...all of this discussion is another good reason to join a local VCCA Region, so what if you have to drive a hundred miles once a month several times a year, that is a good excuse to get the old Chevrolet out and drive it, if yours isn't drivable for a hundred miles fix it or have someone else fix it you don't enjoy spinning wrenches.
If you want to you can even drive your modern iron, we do a lot.

I was under the empression that having a web site such as this is so you can go beyond your local region and communicate with other people who have same interests

You have got to be kidding! The closest region to me is about 220 miles away! And, many, many VCCA members are in the same boat.

JYD, maybe you could start a Chevy pool. Put a keger in the back of the bus and have a designated driver. Take a couple of those blonds with you and listen to Bluegrass music, You could have a good ole time...Oscar bigl drink idea

I do have to wonder why a guy who says he lives in "Shangrala" wants to know where everyone else lives. He should start with his own profile.

It's no secret I own a 1926 Chevrolet and I live in Toronto, Canada. But Toronto is a big place so I'm not to worried that someone would steal my truck. I just think it would be nice to know if any other VCCA members might live in my area and own same year car/truck

John, you might want to read all of my posts. Because I said above:

Quote
EXAMPLE: if we did list Chatter members under what year they own or like -- under "1932" you would see "Louis C." no address or real name or phone number or zip code listed or anything else.

Under "where do you live" "Louis C." would be on the "Florida" list.

Or you can check the club directory or just ask.

And it is spelled 'Shangri-La' it is the name I gave my homestead.

Hey John,

I just figured out what you're talking about.....

His profile doesn't have a real location and he blanks out his VCCA Number.

But, as you say, he wants to know everything about everybody else....

What's with that???

Or you can check the club directory

To look someone up in the club directory (the 2006 VCCA Membership Roster) you have to know their real name and what state they live in to find them in the directory.

Another good reason to NOT join a local geographical VCCA Region!

Maybe we should start an Internet NON-Geographical Region for those that live too far away to attend Geographical Regional meetings, and also those that like to chat about Vintage Chevrolets on the Internet!

....Hello National Board Members!!! Anyone there?
