Hi folks, My coach came with a set of original locks for my side mounts. There was no key and they were rusted solid. I managed to get the lock cylinders out by drilling out the retaining pins. They are worse for the wear, but may be salvagable Unfotunatly, the insides of the housings were so full of rust that I can't tell exactly how the locking pin is supposed to work. The pin is the steel part that is turned by the lock cylinder and slids through,to mate with the grooved nut on the threaded tire irons. The pins are frozen and I'm not sure how much of them has been eaten away by rust. They might have had a spring at one time, but I am not sure. Has anyone else had these things apart? Has anyone made new parts for these locks? I'm not hopeful that I can get the old pins out without breaking them. It would be nice to use the locks, since they came with the car. Thanks again.

Today I looked at a NOS one I have and the pin that holds the lock to the special nut is spring loaded. Also the special nut is spring loaded so when the key is turned the lock would pop off the nut. I first had a little difficulty getting the key to turn the pin to release the lock. I noticed when I got it apart that the pin is a close fit in the pin hole even with no visible corrosion on the pin I could feel a rubbing of the pin in the casting. When pushing the lock down on the special nut it snaps in place. If you can soak this for a few days it may free up. Also some concentrated heat may help. Is the nut in place now?

johnmc, Any luck freeing up the locks? I have what I believe are side mount spare tire lock hardware for a '32 (no locks however). Were the same locks used in '32 as in '31? Nope...the locks used in 1931 are different.

How hard might it be to find side mount spare tire locks (just the locks) for a 32, as hard as finding an original edition of the MPPL August 1, 1932 or worse?

Just the locks are on ebay from time to time. I haven't seen what they went for. Put a want on the Ad forum. The 1929 to 1931 locks I believe are pictured on Bill's: http://1931chevrolet.com web site but I wasn't able to open it this morning.

If you click on accessories P6, sidemounts, on the fender pictures you will see the locks.

Hi folks I have been off line for awhile, sorry for the late response. I managed to get the pins out of my locks using a torch and a lot of patience. The pins are too corroded to reuse. I got a piece of stainless dowel rod from the hardware store and a friend is going to turn new pins for me on his lathe. I have the locks working and got keys for them. I found springs for the pins at the hardware too. I have all the pieces I need to restore them to working condition. Thanks again for all your help.

That is good news! Glad that you were able to restore the locks. Someone else might have given up and thrown them away.
