Does anyone know what products were made or assembled in the Toledo Ohio Chevrolet plant? I do know that the plant was used in the 20's and that at least part of the plant was torn down in the 70's.

Thanks,

Chris

Ken - Thanks for the infomation. We still have the Powertrain Plant here in Toledo. They build most of the rear-wheel drive tranny's for GM today.

Mike - I wish I would have known you were in town, I work about 5 miles from the old Jeep plant. From the news I heard, Chrysler had been ordered to keep the old Overland stacks standing for now.

The Chevrolet plant had been just behind the Overland / Jeep plant. Back in the day, there were all kinds of auto plants along the same set of railroad tracks. I was told that the Chevrolet stack was torn down in the 70's.

The old Autolite plant was torn down about 5 years ago. I work at a plant just down the street.

Thanks for the education guys!!

Chris,
The original plant on West Central Ave on the North side ]no street number given?] was purchased from the Warner Mfg. Co on October 1, 1916.TW Warner was its president and he stay on to run the plant. When Chevrolet built the new transmission plant in 1956 at 1455 West Alexis Road, it shifted production of transmissions from the Central Ave plant to the new Alexis road plant, closing down the the Central Ave plant in 1957. So Chevrolet had 4 transmission plants - Toledo, Saginaw, Muncie, and the Powerglide plant in Cleveland.

Chris, We toured the Toledo transmission plant as part of a Central Meet many years ago. You were probably to young to remember.

Thanks again for the information, guys.

Kenny Lister is a region member that worked at the Alexis road Powertrain plant his entire working career. I have a cousin that still works in the engineering department.

The current Powertrain plant hosts the largest "free car show in Ohio" with about 2700 cars attending annually.

Back Roads, they wouldn't let me tour the plant back in 1978 due to age. I don't understand...I was 6 years old!

Thje original plant was named the Toledo Chevrolet Motor Company with the address being 600 West Central Ave, located about a block east of the Overland plant There was no relationship between the Warner Mfg. Company in Toledo and the Warner Gear Company in Muncie who later merged with Borg & Beck in 1928 to create the Borg - Warner Corp.
