Apparently some members wer having a problem opening the word document that contains the check off list.

Here is a copy that has the formatting removed.

Travel Supplies & Parts List

A bit about these lists and why they were created.

First, these lists are NOT sanctioned by the VCCA. They are offered with the help of many other VCCA members.

The goal here is simple, share some information with other VCCA members.

And finally, these lists are not intended to be “complete” or exactly how you would, could or should plan and pack for a trip. They are simply a guide.

There are three (3) primary lists. One for general items and supplies, the next for more specific parts, and a list of companies that sell parts, travel items, shop stuff or just fun things. I have NOT attempted to list all or even many companies, just those that have been used by our region’s members.

Now whether you own a 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s or newer Chevrolet, we all wonder at times what to plan, pack or purchase when preparing for a road trip.

As you will notice in reviewing these lists, they are based on “be prepared and organized”. And while it’s fun, we all spend a large amount of time planning and packing stuff for a trip. Therefore, we are always on the lookout for different ideas or products that will accommodate road trip supplies. Over the years we have found many ways to pack parts and supplies, from clear plastic containers, cardboard boxes, duffle bags, soft sided & regular toolboxes, old suitcases and even old drink coolers. But whatever it is, having things organized and neatly packed is a good idea.

One current favorite for supplies are vintage suitcases. The style from the 1930’s … 1950’s. The medium size suitcases (approx. 14” x 20” x7”) are good for larger items and the smaller train case (make up case) size for smaller supplies and tools. They are good looking, pack well in the trunk, hold lots of stuff, don’t cost much and they keep the “old car” image alive. You can find them at swap meets, antique malls, maybe your basement or attic or on Ebay. They are relatively inexpensive ($10.00 - $30.00). And since they pack well in the trunk it leaves room in the car for more useful items like people, fire extinguishers, coolers, food, clothes, blankets, water, etc.

Along with vintage suitcases the new soft-sided tool box/case/bag is valuable. And the ever common clear plastic containers that Target or other stores in about 300 sizes and shapes, are always good to use.

One important note, there is nothing more important than safety. Therefore, always pack life safety items like medicines, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, flash lights, cell phones, water, food, blankets, important phone numbers, etc. well within reach.

Speaking of safety, those of you with a Cell Phone may know now about “ICE”. (In Case of Emergency). You list your emergency contacts and phone numbers with the heading ICE, (IE: ICE: Mike 310-543-0000). Emergency crews are trained to seek out your cell phone and look for ICE listings. A safe and reasonable way to travel.

A word of advice heard in developing these lists; “Anything you carry as a spare you will not need. Anything you do not carry will break.”

Enjoy your travels. And remember, “The journey is just as much fun as the destination.”

Have fun & happy motoring

Mike,
This is a great list... I'm going to "promote" it to the top of the pile!!!

(Okay, maybe that's a little self-serving... because then I'll be able to find it in a couple of months when I go to look for it just before our summer trip!!!!) laugh

If I am around, since this was my big idea, I'd be happy to help you unload....

But maybe to help out an old guy like me you can purge the list a bit and leave a few things home....

Travel safe

BigBob, Having thrown a fan blade on my 41 in mid Wyoming back in May of 75 I tend to carry an extra one with me on long trips ever since. Three blades really make it shake. I took off the fan with the intent of getting another one later (I was heading west in a 45 mph wind). The water pump started leaking a shortly after I got back on the road). I stopped in Rawlins and got a fan and a water pump out of a junk yard (on Sunday) and put them on.

About the list I think you meant a generator kit rather than the whole generator. Like the starter, they are a little heavy to carry around.

It's an excellent list. Thanks, Charlie

When your all by your self in the middle of nowhere and 1000 miles from home in a 70 year old car its very comforting to know you havw a few extra parts in the trunk.

Gene's comment ("advice") is well taken. It's a very sickening feeling when the 'dang' car stops. Sometimes in the middle of "no where." Sometimes on a crowded Freeway. No matter where it "quits," it's definitely a "Rolaid Moment"!!!!!

Let's face it, it is a long list. But a heck of a lot of thought went into it.

You can always just carry what you think you might need. And hope for the best....

And when we get to the Meet or tour I usually end up giving, loaning, or selling a spare part to some one in need.

I was just kiddn with ya's pipe Yes i agree, nothing wrong at all with carrying spare parts. Maybee even a tire or two. Could save you from having to walk 50 miles to the nearest parts house. I would say filling station but these days filling stations are just about gas and snacks.

Just curious.

My '29 4-door Sedan (Which you may have seen elsewhere on this site) does not have a trunk.

What do most do in my situation? Clutter the back seat and/or floor board, provide/install a trunk on the back of the vehicle, trailer etc...

Thanks in advance.

Bob

I don't know what the majority do. I put some parts in the car and also a set of tools. In a sedan they are on the rear floor or seat. If the car has a trunk they are in there. If the parts are in boxes, buckets or other containers it makes for easier loading and unloading. Then I have larger parts in the trailer or tow vehicle. As with Gene, I often supply parts to others and like to travel in the back of the pack so I can help those that have a problem.

I purchased an old suitcase for each of our cars. I pack my spare parts in the suitcase and leave it in the car. It keeps everything in one place. At $1.00 per case if it didn't work out I can always put them in another garage sale.
