I bought a number of years ago a ceramic dinner plate that is painted:
"10 Greek Days With Chevrolet"
Does anyone out there have any idea what this plate was made to commemorate?
The plate is 9.5 inches in diameter. It has a metal hook on the back so it can be hung on the wall. It also is hand lettered on the back:
Hand-Made for Chevrolet By: "Lindos" - Keramik
Rudos - Greece.
Keramik I believe is the name of the ceramic plate maker.

I have seen that plate on ebay before and didn't bid because I didn't know what the story was. Hope someone can explain the significance and purpose of the plate.

Well, it goes something like this......

Every year every Greek Church has a celebration. It's usually in the Fall. The big Greek church here in Portland has one. A great party. At the big 'home' church in Athens, it's actually a 10 day 'festival.' Hence "10 days...."

Louis Chevrolet was in Athens in 1920 or 1921. ( I don't know 'why' - but his visit coincided with the festival.) Whichever year it was, it was the same year or possibly the year after his brother won the Indy 500 in a Frontanace (sp ??) race car designed by Louis. Altho Chevrolet was an American 'racer' his French heritage made him a celebrity, even in Greece at the 10 day Greek Festival. He was 'honored' at the festival and a commenorative plate was produced.

Hence, the 'Ten Greek days with Chevrolet.'

Bill.

42bill, thanks for the information. Now I have to ask myself, do I keep the plate or sell it to someone who has a Greek background or to someone who has a great love of Chevrolet history? I wonder how anyone would determine the year that this plate was produced. Do they make one every year for the 10 Day Festival in Athens?

Frontenac(Fronty)equipment was F@rd based, so it seems that the plate would then be a part of Louis Chevrolet history rather than Chevrolet automobile history.

I thought that Fontenac stuff was an overhead valve head used on F0RD 4 cylinder Model T engines for racing.I have read that Louis Chevrolet a Swiss born person, always opped for the French light weight racer designs.

Regarding the "Greek Plate"......

Well, here’s what I’ve decided.

Apparently there were at least 189 of ”˜em made.

They are really nice looking.

The ”˜story’ was just that…… a story. Hope it didn’t offend anyone.

I just called my shrink and made an appointment with him for this Wednesday. 42bill, I was so excited about your explanation of the history on the plate ( I mean made up story ) that I put the Greek plate on ebay with a reserve price of $5,000. But then I find out that the poor Greek Chevrolet plate had its feelings hurt and the plate must be forever left on display as just an average piece of Chevrolet history. My shrink says that I will get over the disappointment, but it will take me 10 therapy sessions at $125/session. So if someone will buy the poor plate for $1250, then I can break even with the doctor's bill.

Have a Merry Christmas and holiday season to all. May the new years bring us all a renewed sense of humor and even an ability to laugh a little even if it is at the expense of a poor defenseless ceramic plate.

I am going to guess that the plate was part of a give away from a sales contest. A trip to Greece was awarded to top preforming dealers in a sales contest a number of years ago. On these payoff trips, items like that were normally given to the dealers wife, they were usually mailed to the dealers homes so that the wife would ask the dealer every day how he ranked in the contest.

Now THAT makes sense. At least a lot more sense than my 'story' did.

Actually, I've decided I'd like to buy one. Whoever had one that maybe wanted to sell it, please send me an email or a private message.

Thanks!!

I wouldn't have remembered this except that I was at the Kansas City Zone dealer signup meeting for the contest and remember how bad the Greek wine tasted that was served at the luncheon.
