I'm been looking at wheels for my 31 sd & have noticed that where the spokes go into the outter rim, that area is wider on some wheels than others. One measures approx 1-3/4 while the other measures approx 1-7/16. Does anybody know why? Are there i.d. marks on 31 wheels? If so, where might someone find them?
thanks, joe

The outer part of the wheel that you are referring too is called the wheel "felloe". The wheel with the wider felloe is 1931, and the wheel with the narrower felloe is 1930. Both wheels are interchangeable for 1930 and 1931, however, the wheel with the wider felloe replaced the wheel with the narrower felloe for 1930. Also, if you look closely, one felloe is higher than the other as well. :cool2: laugh laugh laugh

yes JYD, That is correct. It is a little taller. You didn't indicate if there are any i.d. marks on them
thanks, joe

On used wheels I have found the Chevrolet Bow Tie stamped inside of the hub area, and on a pair of new old stock wheels that I have in the shop, they both have the original part number stenciled on in the gutter area as well. laugh laugh laugh laugh

Actually there are two wire wheels for 1930 and three for 1931. One for each year had adjustable spokes and are extremely rare. The JYD is correct that the center depression is narrower for 1930. There were at least two different manufacturers of wire wheels for 1930 and three for 1931. Hence the difference in markings and dimensions.

The '31 pickup used disc wheels and not wire. They are the same as 1930 disc wheels.
