I just received this email from a buddy of mine in Michigan:

"A fireman near Ann Arbor who has been helping his dad restore a 1929 Duesenberg convertible for 3 years, decided to take his family (wife and three children) out for a spin before they turned it back to the owner who was going to ship it to California for a car show."

"A 25 year old driver of a Volvo ran a stop sign and crashed into the car, flipping it several times. Of course the car had no seat belts. The husband, wife and son were all killed and two little daughters were severely injured. Sure enough, the driver of the Volvo didn't get a scratch. He will be charged with involuntary manslaughter. No word if they can or will restore the Duesenberg."

  :( :( :( :(

Not a nice piece of info. Worst part about it is that it can happen to any of us at anytime. I know nothing of Duesenbergs but guess they are an open top therefore not much to keep you in the vehicle.

"No word if they can or will restore the Duesenberg."

It matters about the car?

alan,

I'm sure that it wasn't meant that way...to put the status of the car on the same level as the human tragedy...just the way the info was relayed to jyd...

but, I'm sure once the shock of the incident passes, the car will matter to someone...if not the current owner, then perhaps, someone else...

Driver should be charged with 3 counts of murder 2 and 2 counts of assault and battery; if DUI make it 'murder 1'. IMHO

In my efforts to learn more of this tragedy I did a search on the net to find info. I found the following string on the AACA chat room that you may find informative. I am pasting the web site information so you can go look.

I work a few days a month at a local hospital as a children's psychologists where I help people of all ages deal with these types of tragedies. And I assure everyone, there are no “Survivors.” These tragedies enter deep into our psyche and stay there, forever altering the life we live.

And the story of life goes, "The Messenger of Misery can stop at any house he chooses."

So tonight, with out fail, stop, hug your loved ones and tell them how important they are to you. Hell, tell them twice.

God Bless the family and the others, for we have all run “stop signs” in our lives.
Michael

Here is an update from the Internet about the type of car the victims were riding in:

"The Duesenberg is J-175, a 1929 Murphy D/C Phaeton owned by CCCA member Chuck Letts of Bloomfield Hills, Mi. Chuck has owned this car since 1954 and was scheduled to show it at Pebble Beach this year."

By the way, "D/C" means "Dual Cowl".

The victims were Brad & Kristin Patton, and their son. Brad was a firefighter for Ypsilanti, MI.

A very interesting thread at aaca, as above. They drifted off to whether seatbelts should be in old auto or not but ended with a very nice piece written on todays driving habits and society. Please go back and give it a moment of your time.
I hope for everyones concern it was an accident, just a horrible accident.
See the news tonight, a plane slids off the runway at Toronto International Airport on fire, over 300 hundred passengers and as reported 14 minor injuries,

There but for the grace of God, we go

Gary, 80 miles from Ypsilanti.

all the airplane passengers had seat belts on at the time of the accident...but the airplane wasn't 75 years old and made of wood...

:( :( :( Gator, I take it you mean the driver of the Volvo. This tragedy finally made the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle this morning. I haven't read anything further on this but if the Volvo did turn the Dusenberg over, it must have been hit very hard as I believe this car weighs somewhere near 3 ton. This was a very sad and unfortunate event all the way around. Stuart

the aaca chat thread indicated that the duesenberg has a fairly high center of gravity and may have been traveling at highway speed...it was speculated that the volvo simply wedged under the duesenberg at the right location and time to cause it to roll over several times...

If the driver of the Volvo would have killed those three family members with a gun he would be in jail. But since a Volvo is not a gun, then I guess the law looks at things differently. mad mad mad

I haven't heard anything new, however, here is a link to the original newspaper story and it also has a photo of the Duesenberg after the accident:

From the newspaper:

"The driver of the Volvo, a 25-year-old Ann Arbor resident, was not injured in the crash. He was arrested and taken to the Washtenaw County Jail, but was later released pending the authorization of charges by the prosecutor's office, which are expected to come later this week, according to the sheriff's department."

Maybe he will be charged.

Oh my Gosh.....

I've just read this and the entire thread on AACA chat room. What a terrible situation.

It certainly will be interesting to see how this all settles out...

Bill.
