I have an original inspection sticker from '53 on the windshield of my '39 and would like to keep it on, but (like the idiot I am) dropped the windshield and broke it. The part with the sticker is still intact, luckily. How can I remove the sticker and save it?

You might have better luck cutting the glass around the sticker and keeping the glass section. A glass shop could help you with this I'm sure.

No, I want to put it on the truck again. I need to transfer it from the old windshield to the new one.

Since it is from 1953 and expired check with the State MV department to see if you will get in trouble for displaying an expired inspection. if not maybe you could color photocopy the old one on something that would hold up on the windshield. In Texas our cars with Antique tags don't require an annual inspection sticker.

I doubt if you can remove the sticker in one piece and reuse it. You might consider cutting out that section of glass around the sticker as VCCA Son suggested, and then take it to a business that makes decals and use it as a sample to have it reproduced. Then you will have a brand new decal to apply to your new windshield. :cool2: laugh laugh laugh

Hi Bob,

When I was in my late teens, 1976, we lived in NJ. I have seen where inspection stickers were retrieved from cars in the junk yard by pressing a wet sponge against the sticker for about ten minutes. Then carefully using a flat razor, peel the sticker away from the window. Also saw this done in Louisiana in the early 80s. My guess is these stickers were pretty fresh and had not been plastered to glass for 50 years.

Penna inspection stickers of that vintage used a water based glue and many fell off the windshield before the six month period was up.Its rare that it is still on there, take good care of it.

I dont want to reproduce it, that's cheating. I want the original one on the truck. I heard of using an iron to steam it off, but I dont want to screw it up. Antiques up here only need inspected once, and I have seen other cars with old inspection stickers on them.

Well....if that's "cheating" then so is using reproduction tires, a reproduction battery, reproduction rubber products, reproduction spark plug wires, reproduction engine paint, reproduction headliner, reproduction wood in the pickup bed, and etc. The list goes on. "Restoration" is the name of the game, therefore reproducing an exact copy of your sticker is not cheating.........it's "restoring". "Cheating" is when you are playing poker and you pull an Ace out of your sleeve to fill out an Ace high straight. laugh laugh laugh

if you use an ace to fill an inside straight, that not "cheating"...that's "bad cheating"... laugh

Kepi Doodle: I said "most" dogs don't play poker, which means that some do. I have seen the same photo.....and those dogs are from the other side of the tracks and they are no relatives of mine.  laugh laugh laugh wink

Now, we need to get back talking about removing or replacing the Bob's inspection sticker. :p

dog,

I think we're done with bob's decal...one that old isn't likely to survive removal AND reinstallation...that'd be two miracles...I think a repro would be the best option...

and no need to get personal...I think I AM related to those other dogs... laugh

Kepi Doodle! Yep, I agree. I also think that the sticker is way to old to save, and that a reproduction is probably the best way to go. It would look very cool and Bob's windshield too! wink :p

Oops!.....didn't know that you were related to those "other side of the tracks" type of mangy mutts. At least I am related to the "cool" bow wow mutt types! laugh laugh laugh laugh

Thanks guys, maybe I'll just cut the glass to save the sticker and put it in my room or something.
