Is a side post battery correct for a 1969 Chevelle? Thanks, Bob

No on that one. Side terminal batteries used on 1969 Camaro, 1970 Pass, Nova, Chevelle with HD battery and then all passenger 1971 until 1975. Looks like some 1/2 ton 69-72 trucks w/o HD battery, also. That is if my parts books are correct.

I made a bo-bo again....the judging manual states side post batteries were standard in 1971 and available in heavy duty batteries in 1970.
Guess that will cost another finger.
I don't remember it as being that cut and dried but will need to research further.

Just a quick peek thru dealer albums indicate the 1970 Camaro and Corvette all had side terminal-as well as the heavy duty for cars....then all cars in 1971.As Chip stated they may have been in '69's also but don't see it mentioned.I always remember the Caprice having a side term. before the other cars.

Thank goodness, JYD and Chevynut, I was afraid I would have to trade the'68 off for a '67, I can't afford to buy another battery right now, I can't stand those dual post jobs with top post and also side posts, it is kinda like nameing your dog Susie-Rex, it may be a male or it may be a female, or whatever....

1971 Corvette parts book lists side post cables for 1969 2nd design.(different part number shown for 1970)...Early 1969 had top mount cables.
The 1970 Corvette and Camaro was not introduced until spring of 1970 so the 1969's of these models were produced into 1970.
I do not have a 1969-71 passenger car or truck parts book (never thought they would be collectable in my life time).
1970 dealer albumn "Delco side post" Energizer battery standard on Camaro and Corvette, heavy duty version available for all models.
1971 albumn "standard on all models"
Looks as if the Judging Manual needs an "up-date" also.

I was told a story about the side post battery I do noy know if it is true or not. The story goes that GM started shiping cars at an angle in rail cars and acid was runing out and ruining the paint on the car under it. so they sealed the battery and went to side posts! Don't know if it is true or not but is an interesting story.

The original side post batteries had filler caps and required adding water as the previous batteries did.Several years later Delco introduced the sealed battery and these were jell filled.Had no caps and has the green "eye" to indiacte condition of charge as it could not be determined with a conventional hydrometer tester. These are good batteries but when eletrical things are left on and they go dead they seem to never hold a good charge again.
