Hallo USA!
I am restiring a chevrolet coach 1931.It seems to be an original car. I read in a dealer servicemanual that you have to dismantle the rear brake-drum by loosing the axel shaft from transmission housing. This car of mine has a cotter pin and a nut like 1936yers model but it is mechanical brakes. My question is,is it possible to put together 1936 yers, or later, rear axle and mechanical brakes. What is the reduction ratio on the rear axle in a 1936 and 1931 yers model?

Hello Bengt, use the correct 1931 parts, they can be found here and would be much easier than converting to hydraulic brakes.

Bengt, What we sometimes call the rear axle housing is in the Chevrolet parts book called a Differential Carrier Assembly and for 1931 marked only with a stamped in (figures not raised) number 76 (the part number is 363076). For 1932 the number is 14. Later units may be stamped 54, 55, 42, or 68.

The Differential Case is cast iron and for 1930 to 1932 units will have a 6 digit number 357388 in raised figures. The numbers will probably appear as 3 upper and 3 lower.

Correction: The casting number 357388 is found on the forward upper right side of the casting and is divided by one of the three setscrews for the pinion bearing. Number 369951 is for 1933 and later units.
