I wonder if someone could explain the use of this tool. I am asking this purely for my own education!

Ok, a quickie explaniation. The tool is used to remove a tire and replace it onto a split wheel rim (like on a 27-28 Chevrolet 21" rim). afterthe air is let out, the safety rim key is pulled, Spread out the swing arms and three arms evenly spaced around the rim, the single arm with the screw gear should be close to the split so that the hooks fit on the rim and the rim is pulled inward and the tire can be removed from the rim. After the tire is repaired or a new one is ready to be put on the collapsed rim the tool is now used (inside flats) to push the rim back together and the safety key can be reinserted..... Anyway that is the way I use it....

MrMack,
thank you for that. Now I see that these rims are truly split rims. I have heard the later rims from the 40s and 50s referred to as split rims and they are completely different.

I wonder, would some of the other makes of autos have used a similar type rim?

In order to mount the tires either the rim needs to be able to be reduced in size, the flange is removeable or has a dropped center. Most early vehicles used the split rims that could be pulled inward. Some had a section that was removed, others a straight split or an angled split.

The early rims were split all the way across and the later type (commonly used on trucks) have a split ring like a circlip. Both types the rim was removed from the spokes or spider.
With the later type you need to be very careful installing the rings and inflating the tyre.
