I had a friend give me a radio that he has had since 1965. It was in his 1953 chevy. ( mounted under the dash ) He got it from his uncle that said it came out of his 1927 chevy pickup. The serial number is G63723 OR Gb3723, Model- Philco Ar-10. And it is 6 volt.
He said it still works but needs cleaning and a new front plastic cover over the numbers.
Can you still get these worked on?

Hi okbluemax, Electrically, the radio can be repaired/restored. Depending on how complicated the dial plastic is will determine if it can be repaired/replaced. The radio may have came out of a 1927 Chevrolet pickup, however that is not an indication of the age of the radio. It is after market and is probably late 30's or early 40's. The tube lineup will date the radio. It may also be dated inside on the manufacturers label.

Thanks,Ray I thought it was to good to be true. I have a 1928 AB Coach that I was going to put it in. I guess it's still old just not original. I'll clean it up a little and see what it looks like in side, and hope to find a number. Before I start on a radio for my car I need to get over having to oil the valves every 50 miles, get my wife to get out and run to the back of the car and see how much fuel we have left and try to get over having a fuel pump run off from vaccum. And then if that wasn't enought I haven't found the master cylinder for the brakes yet, just a bunch of steel rods and levers. Ha Ha Thanks, Max

Ok Okieblue max, keep on keeping on and you could give us Oakies a bad reputation! is that 27 a powerslide or a 3 or 4 speed stick on the floor?

MrMack. I have a 1928 with a 3 speed on the floor. I wish it had a 4 speed, with a granny gear, it would help in parades that go way to slow for my three speed. I may be to young but I don't know what a powerslide is. OK, I sure don't want to make us okies look bad so I'm not going to say anything about those two levers on the steering wheel next to the horn. Thanks, Max

Ok bluemax, just be glad you are so young! POWERGLIDE I just somehow got to calling them POWERSLIDE, after having one in a 1952 Belair when I was a college student, Chevrolet's first truly automatic transmission.
What levers on the steering wheel, Oh! now I know Lever "A" and lever "B" Isn't one of them is for turning signal to signal a left turn and the other the cruise control???

My 53 was converted (at some point) to a 12v system. Not all of the electrical was 'converted.' I think the main reason for even thinking of doing it was to put a CD under the dash. Needless to say, I am still trying to get gas gauge, clock and dash radio to work.

My own experiance with a 53 converted to 12volts was in my brothers 53 10 2 door, he bought it in 57 with a 265 engine and a "floor shift" conversion(which mostly didn't work), and 12 volt "system" which meant 12 volt regulator, generator and light bulbs, the heater fan ran really fast, until it quit running, the gas gauge quit working but the horror story was the day after he had a nice off white Naugahyde pleated and rolled upholsery job done. that evening as it sat at The Whistle Stop Drive Inn someone pushed the cigarette lighter in and before anyone noticed it popped out all the way onto the seat and burned a nice 3/4 inch hole in the new Naugahyde! That is when I decided My 52 Belair with the 261 high compression engine would just have to make do with a six volt system! and it did very well until I traded it off in 1962 for a New Bonneville.
