I've come across a set of 12v musical horns that alledgedly play the "see the usa, in your chevrolet" tune...

doesn't look like they've been used in thirty years...

any advice (cleaning, precautions, etc.) before I hook them up to a battery?..

thanks,

ok epi

You did not say wheather they are the electrical type (Ducane) or the electrical/mechanical type. If electrical, nothing special is required to put them in operation. If they are the mechanical type, there is a place on the motor that should be oiled with an oil can. You should try them on a battery first by just touching the battery with the wire to insure they are not "frozen". If it doesn't operate the "pump" will require servicing.

Both systems were popular in the early 60's. Articles exist in the G&D that I wrote several years ago.

ray,

sorry, you're absolutely right...

they are "fiamm road master" electrical...a pump with four hoses leading out to the four horns...that's about all I can see...

maybe you're going to tell me that these aren't even musical horns, just a fancy european type air horn...I'm just going on what I'd been told by the owner...

thanks,

ok epi

I have a set of these horns that play "Dixie!", our daughter's high school was Robert E. Lee and that was their fight song, I had not used them since 1987 untill a few months ago I hooked them up, and they work fine. they operate with a 12volt compressor that has 5 outlets and 5 trumpet air horns with a clear plastic length of hose going to each horn, the outlet nibs are labeled with numbers and a corresponding number is on the horns. I ordered them from J.C. Whitney in 1986 for around $50

Hi chevrolet,

The "fiamm road master" is the mechanical type. All necessary to operate is to oil and check first operation to insure they are not "stuck".

Some of those units were not coded to the horns, so don't take all the hoses off at once without marking them. Otherwise, you may not recognize the melody played.
