The bolt goes through a hole in the panel, not a good idea in my opinion because the bolt will slowly get loose and the handle will come off in your hand when you least expect it. It's even more of a problem with the rumble seat handle because the bolt will fall out between the lid and the back of the seat.

Yes, I think mine also went through the panel... it seemed like a poor idea when I saw it....

but if you look at it logically, the upholstery was added to the car... then it probably went down the line and all of the chrome stuff was added at the next station. Handles, bumpers, etc. Sorta makes sense.

I doubt that they added the interior handles piecemeal... probably all at once --- AFTER the upholstery was installed.

Any hoo... yes, tighten it so it doesn't walk out on you.

When I purchased my 31 in 1960 it had the original upholstery in it. The bolt went through the upholstery. There is a thin washer under the head of the bolt. In 38 years since restoration I have never had a handle come loose either on the doors or the rumble seat. It is your car and your choice which way you want to do it.

I have an opportunity to purchase a restorable 31 5 pass coupe. My only problem is that the body panel below the trunk lid is missing. If anyone knows where there is one that I can purchase I would be greatful. I know this isnt helping answer the question but I thought this would be a logical place to ask. Or, does anyone know of a restorable 5 pass coupe for sale? Mel Goddard,Lincoln Ne. 402-421-1230 or Email me at; kgmg3@aol.com thank you
