Can I join now? I finaly got my first C.O.E. Bought it it a farm auction last week at a real good price. It's a 1955 1 1/2 grain bed with I think is the 265 engine.The auction was about 50 miles from my house and I was able to drive it home with out any problems.With just a few minor mechanical repairs it should make a good farm truck. The sides of the grain bed look original and not in too bad of shape.I don't have a use for the sides,so if anybody wants them they are free, just come and get them before I throw them in the burn pile. I'm looking for ideals for a seat, any thoughts are welcome.

By the way, the last "COE" was in 1954. If your truck is a 1955 then I believe it is called a "Forward Control" if I remember correctly. :cool2:

Sorry about the pic not coming up,a friend at work said just click and drag.When I get more time I'll try to learn how to post pics.
Johnny That is the truck I have.It does have a V-8 and a motor head at work thought it was a 265. I guess since it's a LCF I don't get to join the COE club,but,there must be a LCF club some where.
I'll check the numbers this weekend and maybe you all can tell me what I have. I said it was a ton and a half because thats what the sale bill said it was. With the over time I'm working I'll only check in every once in a while. Thanks for the info!

COE , LCF , It really doesn't matter Don, it's still a (as we call them here in the south)Snubnose Truck.

The "low cab forward" was a cross between a COE and a coventional truck.Yes, they were considered 2 ton by Chevrolet and came only with V8 engines.The 322 engine was a Buick engine.The 322 engine was available with an automatic transmission.It was called Powermatic and was a forerunner of the Allison thats available today in large trucks.We sold one that was used for hauling milk.The owner kept it one year as we had it more than he did.There were problems getting the auto. trans to shift properly and no one could fix it.

Johnny, the truck you have pictured is a 1955 model. The hood and fender embelems are different than '56. All TF LCF's were 2 or 2-1/2 ton rated, they never made a 1-1/2 ton. All TF LCF's came with V8's only....the I6's were to long to fit in the engine compartment. The 5000 series '55 & '56 only came through with the 265 V8 and the '57, '58 & '59's only had the 283 available. The 7000 & 9000 series (both 2-1/2 ton rated) were introduced in '56. The '56 7000 only had the 265. The '57 & '58 only had the 283 and the '59's had the 283 standard and the 348 as optional. The '56 & '57 9000 only had the 322 Buick Nail Head V8 and the '58 & '59's only had the 348. Intresting and rather strange.The 322 engine was still available in 1958-59 but only in the series 10000 school bus chassis.You would have thought that they would have been anxious to drop it sooner as Buick used it thru 1956 only.

I got a chance to look at the numbers on the drivers door piller, and I hope you all can tell me what I have. The piller post tag numbers are; T255S059898 GVW 18,000 Lb I guess the oringinal seat was comsumed by mice, because I drove it home sitting on an old school bus seat that was not fastened down.It didn't do too bad. The ride was much better than my "50" 6400.
I'll try to keep you posted on my progress,but with a lot of overtime I'll check in when I can.

2-ton, This number doesn't look right to me....as a '55 2nd series it should start with 5A, 5B or 5C, then 55 for the year, then a "letter" identifing the Plant and then the unit number starting with 001001. Could your Chassis number be the engine number also? T = Tonawanda Plant 2 = February 55 = 1955 S = 5100 series with 110" wb 059898 = unit number The "S" was used on the 5100 series from '53 through '55 1st. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm way out in left field on this one!
