NEED HELP PLEASE,
I just installed a rebuilt engine in my old car but I need help with the timing of it. My internal timing is a steel ball with the pointer which I think is good, but I don't have a picture of the distributor and the rotor where they line up for number #1. This was a Chevy truck engine and I can't seem to locate a picture of the firing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The wire location, firing order. etc. is the same for all 6 cyl engines.
When the dist is installed the cap clips will be slightly counter clockwise from straight front to rear....The wire terminal will be facing to the fender.#1 will be in the 5'00 o'clock position when viewing from the fender (side). When the dist is all the way down the rotor should be pointing to the #1 cyl terminal on the cap.#1 cyl valves should both be closed (stems all the way up) and the pointer lining up with the flywheel ball....and this should bring you close enough to allow the engine to start.

Another check if you have the rocker cover off, as gene said the valves for #1 are fully closed and the valves for #6 are "rocking" (exhaust closing inlet opening). At this stage line the steel ball in flywheel with pointer. Watch the direction of rotor button movement set the distributor so the points are just starting to open as the button approaches the #1 position.
An easy way to determine points open is to disconnect the coil 6v wire and connect a test light in that circuit. With the points closed the light will glow until the points open, this will set timing that close to correct you probably wont have to adjust when you check with timing light when engine running. Remember the firing order 1 5 3 6 2 4.
