Hello again everyone. I'm still working on this 38 Truck (yeah, I know) and I'm hearing some things about Oakie bushings.

Is it true that it can be driven in over the existing front bushing without removing it? Or am I better off just getting a puller and putting in a stock bushing and seal?
Thanks again,

Chevtrkmn

The front bushing must be removed. Then the Oakie can be driven in untill it contacts the rear bushing.Your present seal is behind the old bushing. The Oakie has its own seal (at rear of Oakie). You don't need a puller to remove your bushing(s)...Drill out the little dowl that keeps the bushing in place.Very easy to remove. The go thru the slot on the torque tube with a narrow chisel and tap out the bushing.Shown in shop manual. The late 1950 and up are pressed in and require more force.

Thanks a lot Chevgene. I drilled out the dowl and the bushing fell out...it must have been pretty worn. I could not find a seal, could it have disintegrated? Do you recommend the Oakie or should I replace with the stock bushing and seal?

The original seal was cork - it probably disintegrated....I would use the Oakie busing as it covers a different area on the drive shaft (for the rear bushing) that is not worm. Also if the rear yoke of the U joint is worn I would replace the U joint-infact I would replace it for several other reasons also.

Do I need a special tool to drive the Oakie bushing?

A large hammer and a strong right arm will help but are not absolutely necessary. talk talk
